Household Prayer: Constitution Day and Civil Dominion

Brothers, America’s Founders signed the Constitution on September 17, 1787. Deliberations were saved from failing by a motion given on June 28, 1787 by Benjamin Franklin in which he quoted Psalm 127:1, “Unless the LORD builds a house, They who build it labor in vain”, and requested that “henceforth prayers, imploring the assistance of heaven, and it’s blessings on our deliberations, be held in this assembly every morning before we proceed to business; and that one or more of the clergy of the city be requested to officiate in that service.” This historical scene is depicted in the movie “A Great Awakening”. (1)

I pray for our civil leaders today, as Rev. William Rogers did a few days later, July 4, 1787, before the gathered assembly, “… will it please Thee, O Thou Eternal I AM, to favor them from day to day with Thy immediate presence; be Thou their wisdom and their strength! Enable them to devise such measures as may prove happily instrumental for healing all divisions and promoting the good of the great whole… that the United States of America may furnish the world with one example of a free and permanent government…” (2)  I pray for your favor as we take dominion over our civil affairs for justice and the love of our neighbors, children, and grand children, and I pray we do it all to your glory Lord! In Jesus Christ’s name I pray – Amen.

The Constitutional Convention, June 28, 1787, Benjamin Franklin told the others:

In this situation of this assembly, groping, as it were, in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of Lights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of the contest with Britain when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for the Divine Protection. Our prayers, sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. . . And have we now forgotten that powerful Friend? or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance? I have lived, sir, a long time; and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, sir, in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel . . . and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to future ages. I therefore beg leave to move, that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business. THE GOOD NEWS

There is a God that created the heavens and the earth. We humans are created in His image.

We are sinners, we have rebelled against Him, our Creator. Our rebellion has brought “all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice… envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness” to the world. Romans 1:29-31 ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/rom.1.29-31.ESV

Therefore we justly deserve our due punishment of death and damnation, “as it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.’” Romans 3:10-12 ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/rom.3.10-12.ESV

But good news! God is merciful and loving. Jesus is God the only begotten Son and He took our punishment upon Himself in our place. Jesus rose from the dead, defeating death and securing the hope of our salvation. 

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. ““Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”” Acts 2:36-38 ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/act.2.36-38.ESV

We need only repent and believe it. Repent: turn away from our sins, proclaim Jesus is lord and savior, and we will be forgiven our sins and have life ever after! “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”” Romans 10:9-11 ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/rom.10.9-11.ESV

There is hope. Believe in Jesus! ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/jhn.3.16.ESV 

It doesn’t matter who you’ve been or what you’ve done, God stands with arms wide open, ready to forgive you. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/1jn.1.9.ESV

Call 2 Fall Prayer Day 2019

“Jesus said, “My house will be called a house of prayer…” (Matthew 21:13). Our response to Christ’s declaration, coupled with the promises of 2 Chronicles 7:14, give hope to our nation. A massive interdenominational prayer movement is underway, standing in the gap for America.

“Repent, pray, and seek God’s face for our nation on Sunday, June 30th.

“Lead your family in repentant prayer for our nation. The only thing we ask is that you take at least five minutes (those who are able) to fall on your knees in humble prayer before the Lord.

“The Call2Fall Declaration: “I will answer God’s call to fall on my knees in humility and seek His face in repentance so that He might forgive my sins and heal our land.”

“Watch Tony Perkins’ short video about the First Prayer in the Continental Congress. At another desperate time in our nation’s history, pastor-led prayer moved many of our Founding Fathers to their knees and even tears. Eventually, they declared their independence from Great Britain, but at the same time, declared their dependence on the Providence of God. Like these Founders, my prayer is that we will do the same!

Repent of coveting and jealousy.

“Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah”

Shout for joy, praise, and give thanks.

“Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright. Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings! Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.”

God is mighty!

“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!”

Work hard, don’t be like the lazy sluggard.

“Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”

Shout for joy to God!

“Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise!”

Repent!

“If a man does not repent, 

God will whet his sword;
he has bent and readied his bow;
he has prepared for him his deadly weapons, making his arrows fiery shafts. 

Behold, the wicked man conceives evil and is pregnant with mischief and gives birth to lies.

His mischief returns upon his own head, and on his own skull his violence descends.”
Psalms 7:12-14, 16 ESV

Love the Lord and hate evil!

“O you who love the Lord, hate evil! 

He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!”
Psalms 97:10, 12 ESV

Justice will come to unjust leaders of the nations.

“The nations have sunk in the pit that they made; in the net that they hid, their own foot has been caught. The Lord has made himself known; he has executed judgment; the wicked are snared in the work of their own hands. Higgaion. Selah 

The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God. 

For the needy shall not always be forgotten, and the hope of the poor shall not perish forever. 

Arise, O Lord! Let not man prevail; let the nations be judged before you! Put them in fear, O Lord! 

Let the nations know that they are but men! Selah”

There is hope in God because He forgives sins and redeems us.

“If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;

O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption.”

Psalms 130:3-5, 7 ESV
