Just War / Just Cause Theory

Just Cause Theory

“a three-step theology of resistance…

“The [1] first was prophetic denunciation of the civic evil. When the magistrate is defying God, then courageous men in the pulpit should be authoritatively naming what is happening, and denouncing it ( Matt. 14:4). The [2] second stage is for the believers to flee the persecution. Jesus said to do this — when you are persecuted in one city, flee to the next (Matt. 10:23). The [3] third and final stage is to take up arms defensively (1 Sam. 22:2). David’s men were armed, and were not cooperating with Saul’s tyranny at all, and would certainly have defended themselves if cornered, but David would still not lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed. So it is not permissible to undertake a revolution whereby the rebels seek to overthrow the existing authority. But taking up arms defensively is an option. And stating that you will refuse to comply if required by the tyrants to is also an option. This is why George Washington said that weapons were liberty’s teeth. This is why molon labe is an option. As the saying goes, when the government starts saying that you don’t need a gun, then you need a gun.

“In his magisterial Institutes, John Calvin gave us another layer of protection against lawless anarchy. He taught that when the supreme ruler is resisted, it should be undertaken by the lesser magistrate, and that the people should not try to resist tyranny at the top as an inchoate mob. They should resist tyranny from the central government by means of submission to local authorities who are fulfilling their oath of office. Every lesser magistrate has the obligation (not the right, the obligation) to disobey unlawful orders from above. And, when they do this, the people have an obligation to rally behind them.

Just War Theory

“[W]e can evaluate whether… any decision leading to hostile action, is justified according to what is called “Just War Theory.” Over the centuries, Christian thinkers from Augustine to Aquinas to the Reformers—seeking to reconcile Christian teaching on the sanctity of human life with the Christian responsibility to love our neighbors by protecting them from evil—have proposed a set of conditions by which a violent act can be considered justified. These conditions deal with both whether war ought to be waged, as well as how war should be waged.

“[1] First, the cause for going to war and the intention behind it must be just. [2] Second, the war must be waged by a legitimate authority. [3] Third, force must be used as a last resort. [4] Fourth, force used in war must be proportionate to the threat. [5] Fifth, force must not target non-combatants, and finally, [6] there must be a reasonable chance of success.”

Hong Kong: faith and liberty

In support of Desert Storm, underway to support the fleet in the Persian Gulf, I had Christmas dinner December 1992 at the Jumbo Floating restaurant in Hong Kong.

When asked what my favorite port was during my deployment the answer is Hong Kong.

My heart weeps for the church and souls in Communist China and Hong Kong. My heart weeps for the sleeping church in America and the American businesses and consumers choosing profit and cheap goods over God, freedom, and liberty! May these events shake the American church to wake up! Please, God.

Please watch this important video to understand what is going in in Hong Kong. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2vFQtg3jltg&feature=youtu.be

The battle against Communist China in America

China is at war with America. It is a social, political, and trade war. And it appears they are winning.

The Campaign for Working Families reports “The corporate cave in to communist China continues.  Apple bowed to demands of the Chinese government by removing an app sold on iPhones in Hong Kong.  The app enabled Hong Kong’s residents to know where the police are… We were told that trade with China would bring more civil liberties there.  But trade with China is now restricting our civil liberties here in America.  Yes, you read that right… Beijing’s communists are putting our companies on notice:  Tell your employees to shut up.  ESPN and others have already obliged.  Just how much liberty are we willing to surrender in order to pay a few dollars less for a TV or cellphone made in a Chinese sweatshop? (End of Day Report Thursday, October 10, 2019)

Below are some examples of China censoring speech and controlling American businesses.

Duty to Protect – The Centurion

“Though defensive violence will always be ‘a sad necessity’ in the eyes of men of principle, it would be still more unfortunate if wrongdoers should dominate just men.” – Saint Augustine

In “Acts 10, we find the dramatic first inclusion of Westerners into the church with the conversion a Roman soldier named Cornelius, along with his family and friends. This man was already follower of God, but in this passage the Apostle Peter brings him the message of Christ. Once again, this would have been an ideal moment for this warrior to hear that the arrival of Christ had so transformed the situation that, while soldiers were a part of the Old Covenant before Jesus, there was now no longer any place for them. Yet, Peter says none of this… To stand for justice in the face of wickedness by taking up the sword is not contrary to loving my neighbor but its fulfillment.“ (http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/08/christian-pacifisms-achilles-heel/)

“The Bible recognizes the fallenness of man: Human sin will lead to war, but the sinful impulses of even the best of us must be bound by principles, lest our passions seduce us to mirror our foes. When the clouds of war gather, those guided by God’s Word must make every effort to avoid the fight if possible. But, if and when it comes, war must never be seen as a goal or good in itself. We must never let our cause, even a just one, lead us to a place where we see in our enemy anything less than an equal – an image bearer of God yet tainted by sin.” (http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/09/leashing-the-dogs-of-war-war-and-christianity-part-two/)

Militia: an army composed of citizens… called up in time of emergency. (Webster’s 2010)

There are four places in the American Constitution that affirm the Militia’s prior existence, and no law can alter it. The militia is all able bodied members of a community.

Article I, Section 8, Clauses 15 & 16:

[The Congress shall have Power To…]

Clause 15: [ ] “To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;”

Clause 16: [ ] “To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;”

Article II, Section 2, Clause 1:

“The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States…”

AMENDMENT II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Duty to Protect – 2 Samuel 23

“Since it is so likely that children will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.”

CS Lewis

“These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite; he was chief of the three. He wielded his spear against eight hundred whom he killed at one time. And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of Dodo, son of Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle, and the men of Israel withdrew. He rose and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clung to the sword. And the Lord brought about a great victory that day, and the men returned after him only to strip the slain. And next to him was Shammah, the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines gathered together at Lehi, where there was a plot of ground full of lentils, and the men fled from the Philistines. But he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and struck down the Philistines, and the Lord worked a great victory.”

King Stephen, who we reckon was responsible for Christianity in eastern Europe

In the year 1000 or 1001 Stephen, or István in Hungary, became the first King of Hungary. He is known for “broadly [establishing] Christianity in the region, and he is generally considered to be the founder of the Kingdom of Hungary.” (Wikipedia)

It’s generally thought that Saint Stephen was a good king that established a safe and orderly society based on the Christian faith.

He built and organized many churches; he built and organized many monasteries and religious communities; He built and organized many hospices or shelters for travelers, the sick, and the poor; He spread the love and teachings of the one true King Jesus Christ throughout his kingdom.

Duty to Protect – Genesis 14

“When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.”

Genesis‬ ‭14:14‬ ‭ESV‬‬ https://www.bible.com/59/gen.14.14.esv

“Each family has certain assigned duties within it own sphere…” (“Federal Husband” Douglas Wilson)

Abram’s household was equipped, trained, and ready to exercise its duty to protect. Is ours?

“But together families also contribute a molecular strength in the makeup of the two other trans-family governments, which are civil order and the church.” (“Federal Husband” Douglas Wilson)

Our church is only as spiritually and materially as strong as its member families.

Likewise for local civil communities.

Duty to Protect – Numbers 31

We Christian men have a duty to be equipped, trained, and ready to defend our families and communities.

This idea is not modern, it is Biblical. In a series of posts I’m going to highlight some of the Scripture that informs the idea of self-defense and militia.

Militia: an army composed of citizens… called up in time of emergency. (Webster’s 2010)

“So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute the Lord ‘s vengeance on Midian. You shall send a thousand from each of the tribes of Israel to the war.” So there were provided, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.”
