“When God has something very great to accomplish for his church, it is His will that there should precede it the extraordinary prayers of his people.”Jonathan Edwards – #AwakeAmerica2020 – https://www.awakeamerica2020.com
Brothers, this week let’s pray earnestly for a vision of the majesty of God! May God make His presence known to us and our families in new and glorious ways, and May we be renewed with excitement to know God and to make Him known. May God grant us and our wives energy and wisdom to teach and instruct and disciple our children. All the more with reports of the unhealthy condition of American Christianity today, that our families may reform the church and reenchant the world with God’s truth and grace!
Read Psalm 78
“Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth!”
Psalm 78:1 ESV
Distressing “State of Theology”
AIG published a summary of the distressing results of the Ligonier Ministries “State of Theology” survey. They summarize as such…
“So 80% of evangelicals will say that the Bible has the authority to tell us what to do, and 90% claim the Bible is their highest authority, but these results show that they either (1) don’t actually believe that and/or (2) have no idea what the Bible teaches on various moral issues to allow it to guide their principles and beliefs! What a mess the church is in!” (1)
They made this observation among others…
“Parents, particularly fathers, have abdicated their role in discipling their families in the ways of the Lord, leaving it to the church . . . or simply not emphasizing or prioritizing it at all.” (1)
I would add to that observation that many churches don’t actually disciple and train, in other words, they don’t “equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,” (Ephesians 4:12 ESV).
In case we might question this survey, here is another that confirms it…
“Last month, Arizona Christian University released a study called “The American Worldview Inventory, it’s a project led by George Barna. According to the report, nearly two-thirds of Americans believe having “some kind of faith” is more important than the specific faith a person chooses. And, almost 70 percent of those who gave that response identified as Christians.” (2)
Where to start?
“Ultimately, as much as this is a problem in churches, if we truly want to see generational change, we must start in the home with families. Ultimately, the spiritual discipling and training of children is not the job of the church. The church is to come alongside parents and families, supporting them in their God-given mission to train up a child in the way he or she should go. Parents—your family is your responsibility and it should be your first and primary one! Nothing is more important than discipling your children in the ways of the Lord, in his Word, and in the gospel!” (1)
I pray for revival, that the people of God’s church would confess and repent of complacency!
We have been told that we people are the chance result of impersonal chaos working its dark magic on the universe… The outcome of such thinking? Humanity is disenchanted…“Reenchanting Humanity: a theology of mankind” by Owen Strachan
But this is not the biblical account of man… God, the beautiful one, made the human race as his capstone work, his corporeal masterpiece (Ps 8:3-6; 27:4) … The imago dei marks out humanity as an enchanted race. Tragically, humanity disenchanted itself by following the anti-wisdom of the serpent…
If we have assumed… that our children learned what they needed to know simply by ecclesial and cultural osmosis, let us be clear that we may hold this assumption no longer. Now is not the time to play down our doctrine of mankind; now is the time to teach it with confidence and with joy, seeking to be witnesses to fellow sinners and guides to all God’s flock.
